HOLLAND, Mich. (AP) —Brandon Perez, a young entrepreneur from Holland, Michigan, has turned a childhood filled with instability into a thriving fitness enterprise, A1 Fitness, while championing mental health awareness. Raised by a single mother in a low-income household and often evicted from one home to another, Perez faced numerous obstacles as a first-generation Mexican American. Nonetheless, he emerged with a passion for inspiring others both on the field and in the gym.
A Hope College graduate with a degree in kinesiology, Perez came from humble beginnings, navigating the public school system and absorbing lessons from his challenging upbringing. “Growing up, I learned the importance of resilience and motivation,” Perez stated. "I wanted to create an environment where people could transform their lives through fitness."
In 2020, right before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Perez assumed ownership of a former franchise, marking the beginning of A1 Fitness. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, he was able to grow the business and lay the groundwork for what he envisions as a chain of fitness centers. “It was a tough time, but we found ways to adapt and succeed,” he explained.
As his business flourished over the years, Perez’s success led him to develop subsidiary companies, opening doors to new opportunities. A significant turning point in his career occurred when he met Egypt Brown in Puerto Rico while working on a startup tech venture. Brown, a renowned boxing and political advisor known for his work with influencers like Logan and Jake Paul, introduced Perez to the “Fight 4 Mental Health” Celebrity and Sports Brand. “I never imagined that I could work with such influential figures,” Perez said, reflecting on his new partnerships. His collaboration with Brown has allowed A1 Fitness to engage in deals with notable personalities, including Floyd Mayweather, Jake Paul, and Sylvester Stallone—gaining significant power and influence within the Fight 4 Mental Health initiative. This entity is on track to surpass the business valuations of Michigan powerhouses like the Van Andel and DeVos families. Additionally, they are partnering with Raymond James for future investment opportunities.
A1 Fitness not only focuses on physical training but also incorporates mental health initiatives into its philosophy. “We're committed to raising awareness for mental health at the highest levels of sports and government,” said Perez. “Our mission includes creating therapeutic events to support these efforts and promote impactful policies.”
Their work has garnered attention, with A1 Fitness featured on major news outlets such as Showtime, Fox Sports, and CBS. In collaboration with the Fight 4 Mental Health brand based in Las Vegas, Perez aims to create a lasting impact within the community.
Located in Holland, A1 Fitness offers an array of Strength and Toning (HIIT) classes designed for all fitness levels, available seven days a week. Furthermore, A1 Fitness caters to families with an on-site kids’ area, reassuring parents their children are cared for while they pursue their fitness goals. “Here at A1, we believe that fitness is not just about physical strength; it’s about becoming a better version of yourself,” Perez said. “We’re dedicated to helping our members learn how to win, both in fitness and life.”
With his eyes set on future growth and influence, Perez represents a new generation of entrepreneurs who use their voices and experiences to uplift others, proving that with determination and support, dreams can indeed become a reality.
